Population management: contraception

Contraception and sterilization is not recommended due to sharp peaks and troughs inherent to Wild Dog population dynamics, and should only be endorsed when under consideration as an extraordinary option to control population numbers or to prevent inbreeding. This option should be carried out in consultation with the national WAG and would only be considered in the context of the managed metapopulation. A management protocol, which outlines veterinary recommendations and advises on management considerations relevant to contraception, is currently being drafted.
